The eardrum and the ear are assessed with otoscopy. The most commonly used otoscopes consist of a handle and a head. The head contains a light source (LED or halogen) and a lens that enlarges the image. A plastic speculum can be attached to the front of the otoscopes’ head.
Starting the otoscopy, the assessor straightens the ear canal. The speculum of the otoscope is then inserted, after which the eardrum can be assessed. Some otoscopes have an entrance that allows air to enter through the speculum. This allows the mobility of the eardrum to be tested.
